If you ask me, eloping isn’t about running away to get married. It’s about running towards each other. It’s choosing to make your wedding day about the two of you, without the pressure, expectations or fuss of a big traditional wedding. It might be just you two, a handful of your favourite people, or somewhere completely magical and meaningful. Intimate, adventurous, wildly romantic or beautifully simple. There really are no rules. Just two people madly in love, making it official their way.

Absolutely. Eloping can be a completely legal marriage. It’s not a secret loophole or a “run away and hope for the best” situation! As long as you meet the legal requirements for getting married in New Zealand and have an authorised celebrant conduct your ceremony, you’re officially married. So whether it’s the two of you on a mountaintop or a handful of your favourite people by the sea, you can absolutely make it official your way.

It’s actually pretty simple. Choose your dream spot, find your registered celebrant, apply for your marriage licence and organise two witnesses. Then comes the best bit. Turn up, say the legal words, kiss like you mean it and BOOM… you’re married! No giant guest list. No seating plan. No big drama. Just the two of you, your favourite people if you want them, and a whole lot of love.

Any time, if you ask me! Summer is gorgeous. Autumn is dreamy. Winter is moody and romantic, and hello… coats and cuddles! Spring brings flowers, sunshine and all those fresh start feels. The best time is whenever you look at your person and think, “Yep, let’s do this.” There’s no perfect season. There’s just your season.

Well, that depends on how fancy you want to get! The legal bit is simple: your marriage licence ($158NZD), plus your celebrant fee. After that, the wedding world is your oyster. Keep it beautifully simple, or add the photographer, florals, fabulous dinner, dreamy accommodation and maybe even a helicopter. That’s the beauty of eloping. You get to spend your money on the things that matter to you, rather than feeding 137 people you haven’t seen since Year 11! Less wedding circus. More brilliant love story.
